The Times Reader was started in 2020 by a journalist who had spent fifteen years working for regional and national newspapers and had grown tired of the pace at which the industry was moving. Not the pace of news — that is what it is — but the pace of production: the pressure to publish faster, shorter, louder.
This site is the opposite of that. We publish slowly, carefully and at length. We cover England — its politics, its economics, its communities, its contradictions. We try to write in a way that respects both the subject and the reader.
We do not chase traffic. We do not publish clickbait. We do not rewrite press releases. Every piece we publish has been reported, written and edited with care. We make mistakes — all journalists do — and we correct them when we find them.
We are funded by display advertising. Our advertisers have no editorial influence. The separation between commercial and editorial operations is absolute.
Eleanor Whitfield — Political Correspondent. Eleanor has covered local and national politics for fourteen years. She is based in Leeds and focuses on the relationship between central and local government.
Robert Finch — Economics Writer. Robert covers economic policy and its effects on households and businesses. He previously worked as a financial analyst before moving into journalism.
Harriet Moss — Communities Reporter. Harriet's work focuses on voluntary organisations, community institutions and the social infrastructure of rural and suburban England.
Simon Arkwright — Transport Correspondent. Simon has written about transport policy for a decade. He is a regular rail commuter and writes from experience as much as from research.
